Essen, May 29, 2017.  Cutting-edge digital technologies for greater energy efficiency in buildings are being created in the "ista Technikum" in Essen's West Quarter. The company is therefore further expanding its role as a driver of digital innovation.

All ista's products – from digital metering devices for heat energy to smart smoke alarm devices – will now be developed in the new technology centre. The company is therefore pooling its entire research and device development, from the first concept idea to market maturity, at one location. ista wants to position itself even better in order to support its housing industry customers worldwide in the digitalisation of buildings.

To this end, the energy service provider is purposely giving the future roughly 75 employees of the technology centre freedom to develop new ideas and concepts independently, just like in a start-up. "In our new Technikum, we are working on innovative and attractive solutions for the smart building," says Jochen Schein, ista's Chief Operating Officer (COO).

ista invests over 100 million euros in digital devices and infrastructure every year. Today, the company already has 16 million so called "connected devices" in use. 400,000 of these devices are added every month. Heat and hot water consumption can therefore be read directly by radio without a meter reader having to enter the apartment. More services for the intelligent multi-family building ("smart building") will be added in future.
